Police are speaking to one "extremely remorseful" person after a threat on social media resulted in an Auckland high school being closed for the day.

Sacred Heart College

In an earlier email to parents, Sacred Heart College in Glendowie detailed what caused the closure.

"The police have advised that, given the nature of the anonymous threat, we err on the side of caution and close the school for the day until their investigations are completed," the email said.

"If your son is already at school, please arrange for him to be collected.

"We apologise for any inconvenience that this may cause you but the safety of students and staff is paramount."

The school said further information would be provided to parents.

On Wednesday afternoon, police provided an update saying they are speaking to one person over the threat.

"They are extremely remorseful for what has occurred," police said.

"Police have wound down our presence in the area but we will continue to liaise with the school as our inquiries continue."

A spokesperson for Sacred Heart College told 1News there wasn't a threat to the wider public.

The spokesperson said she couldn't go into the details of the threat while police were investigating.
