A search is underway after a person failed to return from free-diving in Wellington this afternoon.

Police say they were called to Karaka Bay about 6pm after the diver was reported overdue.

Police staff, including the maritime unit and police national dive squad, along with the Coastguard, Surf Lifesaving and a helicopter, have been deployed to search the wider area.
