SH25a between Kōpu and Hikuai closed due to 'severe' cracks

State Highway 25a between Kōpu and Hikuai in the Coromandel has been closed following the discovery of severe cracks in the passing lanes.

Waka Kotahi NZTA said that cracks near the top of the summit on the Kōpū side mean a slip is "imminent" and the road is unsafe to drive on.

The Thames-Coromandel District Council said it is unlikely the road will be open until midday tomorrow.

They are encouraging motorists to use alternative routes via SH2 Waihi or SH25 Whangapoua Hill.
