One person has died after a vehicle collided with a horse on State Highway 2 in Waikato.

Police said they were called to the scene in Maramarua around 2.40 this morning.

The horse had to be euthanised following the accident.

Police said the person died at the scene and a second person was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Inquiries into the incident are ongoing.
