A shoe with what is believed to be a human foot inside was found on Petone Beach in Wellington around 8am today.
Detective Senior Sergeant Steve Williamson said police scoured nearby land and water, but no further findings came to light.
"Formal identification of the foot will take place in due course," he said.
"Further details will be provided when they become available."
