A German man appears to have suffered no ill effects after being vaccinated 217 times against Covid-19, against medical advice.
The Lancet Infectious Diseases scientific journal published an account of the "hypervaccinated" man's bizarre case this week.
The Magdeburg 62-year-old "deliberately and for private reasons received 217 vaccinations against SARS-CoV-2 within a period of 29 months", the article's authors report, adding the man's vaccinations "did not lead to adverse events".
"[But] importantly, we do not endorse hypervaccination as a strategy to enhance adaptive immunity."
The University of Erlangen-Nuremberg team heard about the man's case through newspaper articles, the BBC reports.
When contacted, the man expressed an interest in undergoing tests. He provided blood and saliva samples – and also insisted on receiving a further vaccination during the study.
There was no sign that the man had ever been infected with Covid.
But that's not to say that more doses are necessarily better.
"Current research indicates that a three-dose vaccination, coupled with regular top-up vaccines for vulnerable groups, remains the favoured approach," the reasearchers said. "There is no indication that more vaccines are required."
The city's public prosecutor gathered evidence for 130 of the jabs and opened an investigation into alleged fraud, but no criminal charges were laid.
