King Charles sees his face on banknotes for the first time

April 10, 2024

King Charles has been officially presented with the new British bank notes stamped with his face.

His Majesty was shown the first 5, 10, 20 and 50 pound bank notes which feature his portrait.

The existing money with the late Queen Elizabeth will continue to be used alongside the new bank notes, which will go into circulation across the UK in June.

Last month it was revealed King Charles' image will appear on New Zealand coins after he approved application of the effigy (image).

It's unlikely Kiwis will see the new coins until 2027, however.

"The first circulating coin to bear the new effigy will likely be the 10-cent piece, with an expected minting date of 2025," director of money and cash Ian Woolford at the Reserve Bank said.

"The first mintings of the other four denominations with the new image are likely to be in 2027."
