The New Zealand under-20s have won the inaugural Under-20 Rugby Championship after beating Australia 36-25 on the Sunshine Coast this afternoon.
The Baby Blacks survived two questionable sinbinnings in the second half to claim the victory – the first to right wing King Maxwell for allegedly taking out a player under a high ball and the second to first-five Rico Simpson for an alleged illegal cleanout.
The Australians scored two tries on the vacant left flank while Maxwell was off the field to take the lead after New Zealand controlled the first half well to lead 12-6 at halftime.
With New Zealand short-sided, the home side led 25-19 but New Zealand’s composure and skill shone through in adversity as reserve hooker Manumaua Letiu scored a seven pointer after earlier being denied what appeared a fair try and then, with the visitors holding a one-point lead, reserve inside back Sam Coles kicked a straightforward penalty to extend their lead.
Centre Xavi Taele made it safe for New Zealand with a converted try with three minutes remaining.
Kiwi left wing Stanley Solomon helped himself to a first-half double.
Earlier in the tournament, New Zealand drew 13-13 with South Africa and beat Argentina 43-20.
