Aimee Fisher beats Lisa Carrington in world record win

Aimee Fisher is the world's fastest paddler in history in the women's K1 500 metres, beating Dame Lisa Carrington at the Canoe Sprint World Cup in Hungary's Szeged in world record time.

Fisher clocked 1:46.19, beating the previous world record by 0.27 of a second, set by Belarusian Volha Khudzenka in 2019.

She needed every bit of her talent to beat main rival and compatriot, 15-time world champion Dame Lisa.

Dame Lisa stormed out of the blocks and led by more than a boat length at the midway stage, her dominance seemingly so strong it led the commentators to remark: "What a lead, you don't want to give yourself too much work to do to peg back Lisa Carrington."

But they also noted Fisher's big finish and big may be an understatement. Over the next 500 metres, Fisher showed incredible power and speed to reel in Dame Lisa and claim the World Cup gold by 0.33 of a second.

It bodes well for the Olympics for the Kiwi duo and the potential for a famous Kiwi 1-2 finish, with their other rivals more than two boat lengths behind.
