Dairy farmers gear up for 'big day' of moving tomorrow

Southland contract milker and social media personality Tangaroa Walker told Seven Sharp it was a "big day".

If you're city folk, you might not know that this weekend is huge for dairy farmers.

For thousands of workers around New Zealand and their families, June 1 is a big deal as it marks the start of a new dairy farming season.

From the crack of dawn contract and share milkers in their thousands will be hard at work to pack up and move their equipment, stock and whānau to new farms, new homes and new communities.

If it sounds like an upheaval — that's because it is.

Southland contract milker and social media personality Tangaroa Walker told Seven Sharp it was a "big day".

"It's a big day because not only are families moving from one region or one part of one district to another, but my staff have to move their families [and] kids have to go to new schools."

He said it was scary for first-timers to go to a new farm and wished everyone moving good luck.

"You've got people who have never worked for someone before and never been to the farm before who are literally starting work tomorrow and starting work in a new place, on a new farm that they've never worked for before."

Walker warned people who may be travelling on roads across the country tomorrow that there could be big trailers or stock moving along the roads.

"If you're not a farmer, you'll probably think it's quite weird."
