Kiwi tennis player Lulu Sun's dream run at Wimbledon has continued, winning into the third round after beating fellow qualifier Yulia Starodubtseva 4-6 6-3 6-2.

Sun managed to repeat her first round heroics where she knocked out world number eight Zheng Qinwen.

Sun got off to a shaky start against Ukrainian Starodubtseva, dropping 11 of the first 12 points.

The Ukrainian broke Sun’s serve to lead early in the first set as the Kiwi dropped the first set 4-6.

However, the 23-year-old returned the favour in the second set and broke Starodubtseva’s serve before the longest stage of the match.

Late in the second set, the fans watching court 16 were treated to a thrilling game which went to a 14th deuce.

Sun was 5-2 up and trying to break the Ukrainian's serve to claim the second set but was forced into an arm wrestle with her opponent.

The game lasted over 15 minutes but Sun couldn’t quite hold on despite having six set points.

She managed to win the second set 6-3 in the next game off the back of a powerful ace on set point. She continued to grow in confidence as she broke Starodubtseva’s serve early in the third set and then didn't hold back.

Sun fired back up to yet again break her opponent's serve, which saw her serving for the match.

She didn't drop a point in the last game and breezed through the third set in the end 6-2 to send her to a historic third round appearance.

The Kiwi is set to play China's Lin Zhu on Friday 10pm NZT.

Sun was born in Te Anau but was playing under the Switzerland flag before she changed her allegiance to New Zealand earlier this year.

It was also announced earlier in the week that Sun is going to the Olympics alongside fellow Kiwi Erin Routliffe.

Routliffe is also competing at Wimbledon and won her first round women's doubles match 6-2, 7-5.
