Athletes in action: Still plenty of medals on offer for Kiwis at Paris

Hamish Kerr celebrates his world indoor title.

With just two days of competition remaining at Paris, New Zealand is poised for a big finish that may yet realise our largest-ever Olympic medal haul.

We started slowly, needing almost a week to secure our first medal — the Black Ferns Sevens' gold — but now sit 12th on the overall table with 15, including six golds.

At Tokyo 2020, the Kiwis brought home 20 medals, while our most gold were the eight won at Los Angeles 1984. Both those targets seem achievable.

Overnight, Dame Lisa Carrington will face teammate and rival Aimee Fisher over K1 500, with either capable of gold and both capable of the podium

Golfer Lydia Ko heads into the final round at Le Golf National with a share of the lead and a pedigree of medalling at both previous occasions the sport has been contested at the Olympics.

High jump Hamish Kerr contests his final, ranked No.1 this year, after winning the world indoor crown.

At the velodrome, Aaron Gate and Campbell Stewart compete in the two-rider madison, where they took bronze at the last world championships.

Weightlifter David Liti may be an outside chance, after finishing fifth in the +102kg division at Tokyo three years ago.

Tomorrow, cyclist Ellesse Andrews is a strong medal hope in the women's sprint, while Ally Wollaston is a rough chance in the omnium, where she finished sixth at the 2023 world championships.

Still plenty to get excited about at Paris.
