New Zealand tennis player Lulu Sun has retired injured from her debut match at the US Open in New York.
Sun needed an injury break in the first set against world number 76 Lucia Bronzetti of Italy and was unable to continue in the second.
The Te Anau-born player appeared uncomfortable throughout the opening set.
The pain persisted and Sun's withdrawal from the match was announced after Bronzetti took the first set 6-3.
The 23-year-old has soared over 200 places in the world rankings over the last year to a career-high 41. She recently fell just short of a maiden WTA title, going down in the final of the Monterrey Open in Mexico
