Rachael Gunn says she's sorry for the backlash experienced by the breakdancing community in the wake of her controversial appearance at the Olympics, but says she "can't control how people react".
The 37-year-old b-girl, who competes under the name Raygun, made international headlines after failing to score a single point in her three round-robin battles.
The Macquarie University professor quickly went viral, with her efforts parodied by celebrities and late-night television shows alike.
Many came to her defence as well, offering her support in the wake of her efforts going global.
In a snippet of an interview with Channel Ten’s The Project that is airing in Australia this evening, Gunn said: "I am very sorry for the backlash that the community has experienced, but I can’t control how people react."
Host Waleed Aly asked her if she "genuinely think you are the best female breaker in Australia?"
"I think my record speaks to that," she said.
In a video posted to social media after the Olympics, Gunn said she "didn't realise that that would also open the door to so much hate which has, frankly, been pretty devastating".
"But I went out there and I had fun. I did take it very seriously. I worked my butt off preparing for the Olympics and I gave my all – truly."
The sport made its Olympic debut but will not be making a return at the 2028 Games in Los Angeles. It's also unlikely to make an appearance at the 2032 Olympics in Brisbane.
