'It's OK': Mixed reviews for new statue of Queen Elizabeth II

September 12, 2024

A new statue of Queen Elizabeth II unveiled at Antrim Castle Gardens has received mixed reactions from the public and those online.

The sculpture crafted of bronze depicts the late queen alongside Prince Philip and their two corgis. It was created by north Belfast artist Anto Brennan.

In a post to social media on September 7, Newtownabbey Borough Council said the sculpture "captures Her Majesty in a dignified pose, reflecting her grace, steadfastness and lifelong dedication to public service".

Comments have since been turned off on the post due to the mixed response. A statement issued to the BBC by the council said "art can sometimes spark diverse opinions".

"It's important to emphasise that the sculpture has been warmly received by most who have seen it in person," it said.

One visitor was very positive about the portrayal, saying she thought it was "very obvious who they are" and that everyone would pick out something that was "not quite right".

"To me, I think overall, it's very good. It is excellent. And, you know, we could be very critical. But, I just think that depicts them very well," she said.

Another visitor to the statue was not as complimentary, saying: "I think it could be a better resemblance, if you know what I mean. It's not sort of like the photographs that we normally see of her, but it's OK."

It's not the first time a depiction of a royal figure has sparked debate of this nature. King Charles' first official portrait received mixed reviews after it was unveiled in May this year.

The King was shown with his hands clasped at the hilt of his sword and a butterfly above his right shoulder, with an eye-poppingly red Welsh Guards uniform and a background of similar hues.
