West Indies upset England, now face White Ferns in semifinal

October 16, 2024
West Indies players celebrate victory following the ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2024 match between England and West Indies at Dubai International Stadium.

The White Ferns have learnt who their opponents will be for their semifinal at the Women's T20 World Cup in the UAE.

The West Indies claimed a shock victory against England this morning, winning by six wickets to progress to the top of Group B. They hadn't beaten England since 2018 and it is the first time England haven't made it out of the group stage since 2010.

England batted first to set a competitive total of 141-7 which the West Indies chased down in 18 overs.

Nat Sciver-Brunt was the best of England's batters hitting 57 off 50 balls. A big blow for England was captain Heather Knight retiring hurt on 21 and failing to return to field for her side.

The West Indies scored 67-0 in their powerplay as England dropped five catches off the batting of opener Qiana Joseph.

Joseph went on to reach 52 off 38 balls and achieved a 102-run partnership with fellow opener Hayley Matthews.

Three teams finished tied on three wins and one loss in Group B, but the West Indies and South Africa progressed to the semifinals on net run rate.

The White Ferns progressed to the semifinals after defeating Pakistan by 54 runs on Tuesday.

The White Ferns last played the West Indies in a T20 World Cup warm-up match last year which the Kiwis won by 32 runs. They also won a five-match T20 series 4-1 against the West Indies in 2022.

With England's exit, Australia must be favoured to take their fourth T20 World Cup in a row, should they get past South Africa in their semifinal early Friday morning.

Women's T20 World Cup semifinals:

Friday, October 18: Australia v South Africa (3am)

Saturday, October 19: West Indies v New Zealand (3am)
