NZ Kiwis enforcer Leo Thompson is keeping his cards close to his chest on whether he remains at Newcastle Knights beyond 2025 as he tests his value in the NRL open market — but he's adamant the current Pacific Championship campaign is front of mind.
"I haven't thought about it at all, to be honest," Thompson told 1News. "My focus is here at the Kiwis and, once I finish up, I'll have a think about it.
Other clubs are understood to be chasing Thompson beyond 2025 and his current deal is reportedly worth A$350,000 a season, well under his worth.
The decision over his next destination may come down to twin brother Tyrone Thompson, who has joined the Knights.
"It will be cool to link back up with my brother," said Leo Thompson. "I haven't played with him for about five years now and it would be mean to get a game with him again."
Gisborne-born Tyrone joins Newcastle after playing the last three season with the Chiefs in Super Rugby, even representing the All Blacks XV in 2022 and Māori All Blacks.
"My brother is starting preseason this week," said Leo. "He will be part of my thinking but also, he's his own man, I'm my own man."
Canberra Raiders are reportedly among those chasing Leo Thompson's signature, after he played junior football in the capital. while Canterbury Bulldogs are another possible destination.
Thompson can speak to other clubs when the NRL free agency period begins on Friday.
