The Black Caps have been well beaten in their rain-delayed opening ODI against Sri Lanka in Dambulla.
Sri Lanka won the toss and chose to bat first, putting up a total of 324/5 which featured centuries from two of their batsmen.
Kusal Mendis reached 143 off 128 deliveries and Avishka Fernando scored 100 off 115 balls. The pair put together a partnership of 206 runs.
Jacob Duffy was the Black Caps' best bowler for the Sri Lankan innings as he took 3/41.
The other Black Cap bowlers were expensive with Mitchell Santner returning 0/53 from his 10 overs. Ish Sodhi (1/62) and Michael Bracewell (1/73) also struggled against the Sri Lankan batters who made easy work of the Black Caps bowling contingent.
The Black Caps were then sent in to bat chasing 221 after rain interrupted play. After a strong start from Will Young (48) and Tim Robinson (35), both openers were dismissed in the same over off the bowling of Maheesh Theekshana, to leave the Black Caps at 89/2.
The middle order then didn't fire for the Kiwis and left them at 134/6. Henry Nicholls, Mark Chapman and Glenn Phillips all scored under 10 runs in the Black Caps run-chase.
The tail-end batters for the Black Caps tried to put up a fight but fell 45 runs short of the revised DLS target of 221. Michael Bracewell finished on 34 not out as the Black Caps ended on 175/9.
Black Caps captain Mitch Santner said his teams' batting performance let them down today.
"When you lose two set guys, it can be a challenge to start on these wickets, we found that in the T20s as well," said Santner. "But we tried to keep firing shots... but if you lose wickets in clumps, it's a challenge.
"Obviously with the rain and dew, we were confident at the halfway stage. I guess it was one of those days, it was a learning today for sure. I didn't think we bowled too badly, it was just that great partnership that showed how to bat on this sort of wicket."
Sri Lanka take a 1-0 series lead for the three-match ODI series.
The Black Caps will travel to Pallekele for the remaining two matches of the series with the next match starting Sunday evening.
