World Cup star Plimmer sidelined by injury against Australia

White Ferns batter Georgia Plimmer has been sidelined for the rest of the year, after suffering a bone stress fracture in her groin.

Plimmer, 20, emerged as one of the heroes of New Zealand's shock triumph at the T20 World Cup at Dubai last month, hitting two boundaries in the opening over of the final against South Africa and amassing 150 runs across the tournament — equal top scorer with Suzie Bates for the Kiwis — with a high score of 53.

The opener began experiencing pain in her left hip during the subsequent one-day series in India and scans have confirmed the need for six weeks' rest. She will miss the one-day home series against Australia next month, as well as most of the domestic T20 and one-day competitions.

"We're really gutted for this to happen to Georgia when she’s at the top of her game,” said NZ coach Ben Sawyer. "She's certainly a loss for us heading into an important series against Australia.

"After her recent success at the World Cup and in India, it's disappointing she won't be able to continue that form for the Wellington Blaze and against Australia next month.

"Georgia's determined to rehab well and get back as soon as she can, and we’re wishing her a smooth recovery."
