Trump receives 'unprecedented' invitation from King Charles

US President Donald Trump has received an "unprecedented" invitation for a second state visit to the UK from King Charles today.

It came via letter, presented by UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer at The White House.

Starmer said the invitation was "unprecedented".

Trump received his first invitation during his first presidential term, making a second "truly historic", the UK leader said.

When presented the letter Trump said: "Am I supposed to read it right now?"

"Please do. I've got to tell him what your reaction is ... I need to know," Starmer responded, to laughter.

After describing the importance of the letter, Starmer added: "What I haven't got yet is your answer".

"The answer is yes," Trump said. "On behalf of our wonderful first lady Melania and I, the answer is yes. We look forward to being there and honouring the King, and honouring really your country. Your country is a fantastic country and it will be our honour to be there, thank you very much."

During Trump's first term, one of Starmer's predecessors, Theresa May, announced in 2017 at The White House Queen Elizabeth II had invited Trump for a state visit to the UK.

Trump during his first state visit to the UK in 2019.

Two years later, in 2019, the invitation materialised when Trump visited London to meet the monarch.
