NZ Breakers shaken up by new owners as Kiwi brothers take over

Parker Jackson-Cartwright of the Breakers and Anthony Drmic of the Jackjumpers compete for the ball during the round 13 NBL match in Hobart, Australia.

The New Zealand Breakers are under new ownership with a massive personnel cleanout believed to be underway at the NBL franchise.

1News understands several staff at the Breakers were given letters earlier this week stating they would lose their jobs, including chief executive Lisa Edser.

It was also understood that several players and some coaching staff would be offered new deals or roll over on existing contracts, such as head coach Petteri Koppinen, a former Finnish international.

The New Zealand Companies Register showed an entity named NZ Breakers Club Limited had been established on February 28, formed by brothers Leon and Stephen Grice.

The pair, who founded Rako Science and introduced a non-invasive saliva PCR test to the country during the Covid-19 pandemic, were listed as 50/50 shareholders.

American Matt Walsh and his partners have owned the basketball club for the past seven years.

The Breakers finished last season in second to last position on the NBL table with 10 wins from 29 games.

The next NBL season was due to tipoff in around six months.
