After months of speculation, 1News can reveal Christchurch has won the race to be New Zealand's second Supercars venue, with Ruapuna Park signing a multi-year agreement, beginning next year.
It's understood Euromark Motorsport Park Ruapuna, near the international airport on the western fringe of the city, won the bid for its location, plus the accommodation and hospitality infrastructure in Christchurch.
It also came down to funding.
Cromwell's Highlands Park also had a bid in but it has been reported that the Government was not willing to pump any extra into Central Otago's economy, as Queenstown is already a significant drawcard.
The first round for the Christchurch venue is proposed to run alongside Taupō's event, which is locked in until 2026.
In a statement ChristchurchNZ confirmed they’ve submitted a bid and they “look forward to hearing official notice from Supercars”.
1News understands a formal announcement from Supercars is imminent.
