'Where do you even start?': Tasman mayor says damage worse than last time

What you need to know:

The worst of the wild weather eased overnight, and clean up would begin today for many people.
The Nelson Tasman region remains under a state of emergency, with evacuations, widespread flooding, slips, power cuts, and pleas to conserve water.
Several sections of state highways remained closed across the top of the South Island.
Earlier orange heavy rain warnings for Waikato, Coromandel Peninsula, Rotorua, Bay of Plenty, Mount Taranaki, Nelson city and Marlborough have now expired.
