A Brisbane kindergarten is set to return children's artwork to their parents for free after previously asking for more than AU$2200 (NZ$2493) to help pay off the centre’s debt.

Earlier this month, the director of Craigslea Kindergarten in Chermside West, Thomas D’Souza, sent an email to parents informing them they would be charged if they wanted to take home their children's portfolios.

The centre said the funds would help pay back AU$40,000 (NZ$45,325) it allegedly owed to staff.

One parent yesterday told Nine it was "ridiculous – absolutely ridiculous".

"I don't even really have words for it."

The mother said parents had signed consent forms at the beginning of the year stating that "the portfolios belong to us and that parents have a right to handle their kid's sensitive information, including photos".

Early education provider C&K, which was affiliated with the kindergarten, stepped in to help recover the masterpieces, Nine reported.

In a statement, a spokesperson for the company told Nine they were "now available for families to collect free of charge".

The company added that it would be working alongside the kindergarten to ensure it would re-open for term four following its closure three weeks prior.
