A homicide investigation has been launched after a man found critically injured on the front lawn of a Gisborne property died in hospital.
Police said they were following "several lines of inquiry" and were searching for a person seen running from the area shortly after the incident.
Officers were called to Ormond Rd in the suburb of Riverdale shortly after 4am.
A 36-year-old man was found critically injured on the front lawn of the property between Lytton Rd and Riperata St.
Tairāwhiti Area Commander Inspector Danny Kirk said police rendered first aid to the man, who was taken to Gisborne Hospital where he later died.
"A person was seen running across Ormond Rd and into Riperata St soon after the incident occurred, and we would like to speak with them."
Kirk said the investigation team would be in the area carrying out inquiries in the coming days.
"We ask anyone with information, or who heard or saw the incident, to please contact us."
He acknowledged the death would cause "some unease" in the community.
"We are working hard to find the person or people responsible. While that work continues, police officers will have a visible presence in the area."
