The Black Caps may be without key all-rounder Rachin Ravindra for the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy series opener against Australia in Mount Maunganui tomorrow following a freak accident in training.
Ravindra suffered a facial injury after colliding with the boundary fence while attempting to take a catch at Bay Oval during a fielding drill.
1News captured footage of the 25-year-old leaving the field and staff fixing the boundary.
Michael Bracewell, who is leading the side in the absence of Mitchell Santner, told media in the pre-match news conference that Ravindra had a "little bit of a cut" to his face.
"I think he's being assessed at the moment, it's too early to tell what sort of impact that will have on him, but hopefully it's just a minor graze and he'll be out there tomorrow with us."
In an update this afternoon, the Black Caps said the cricketer "sustained a facial injury and will continue to be monitored by the medical team after passing an initial concussion test at the ground".
Santner was ruled out of the series as he recovers from a hernia.
Meanwhile, Australia was also hit by injury woes in training after star all-rounder Glenn Maxwell suffered a broken arm during a net session at Bay Oval.
Maxwell was bowling to teammate Mitch Owen when he was struck on the wrist by a powerful shot.
"I saw Owen absolutely smoke it, and then the aftermath — it hit Maxi on the wrist. It didn't sound good," said teammate Matthew Short.
"Owen's not the guy you want to be bowling to in T20 training, that's for sure."
Watch the Black Caps take on Australia live and free from Bay Oval - with all three T20Is streaming on TVNZ 1 and TVNZ+ from 7pm on October 1, 3, and 4.
