Flight cancelled after Air NZ plane is struck by lightning

An Air New Zealand flight from Dunedin to Auckland was cancelled today after an aircraft was struck by lightning during an earlier flight.

This morning, the plane was struck during a flight from Auckland to Dunedin, chief operations officer Alex Marren told 1News.

The route was typically flown by an Airbus A320.

The aircraft was undergoing standard engineering checks, Marren said. As a result, flight NZ676 from Dunedin to Auckland was cancelled.

Air New Zealand was reaccommodating customers onto alternate services, and an additional flight was put on from Christchurch to Dunedin to help customers get where they needed to go, Marren added.

"While lightning strikes are relatively rare, our pilots are well-trained in these situations."
