Locations of six new average speed safety cameras confirmed

Locations for six new average speed safety cameras have been confirmed by the New Zealand Transport Agency.

The new cameras, which calculate a vehicle’s average speed along a length of road between them, will be set up at six locations in the South Island and the lower North Island. It means drivers will be ticketed if their average speed between the two cameras is over the limit.

They will join 11 other sets previously announced by the agency to be installed in the upper North Island.

Construction on the Otago and Southland sites was due to start later this month, with the rest starting in mid-2026.

Tara Macmillan, NZTA Head of Regulatory Strategic Programmes, said the locations were selected based on crash patterns, traffic volumes, and the number of drivers exceeding the limit.

“All of this evidence tells us that there is a serious risk of people being killed or seriously injured in crashes on these stretches of road," she said.

“The risk of crashes is significantly reduced if more people drive to the speed limit. By installing average speed safety cameras, we are reducing that risk and making these roads safer for everyone who uses them.

“Safety cameras reduce speeding, making crashes less likely to occur, and ensure that if crashes do happen, the people involved are far more likely to walk away unharmed."

Signs would mark each camera area, with additional signs on longer roads to remind drivers to check their speed and slow down.

NZTA will not receive any revenue from tickets, which goes into the Government Consolidated Fund. NZTA took over responsibility for speed cameras from the police in July.

Today's announcement comes just under a month before the first set of cameras announced by NZTA was expected to go online from December 1 at Matakana Road in Warkworth.

Prior to the six announced today, NZTA had previously revealed 11 other locations to receive average speed safety cameras.
