Severe weather watches have been issued for swathes of the North Island. Follow 1News' live updates for the latest developments.

What you need to know

  • A severe thunderstorm watch remains in force for Northland, Auckland, Great Barrier Island, Coromandel Peninsula, Waikato, Bay of Plenty, Rotorua and Taupō. 
  • The storms were expected to include torrential downpours, with up to 40mm of rain falling in an hour, which can lead to slips and flash flooding.
  • A caravan was overturned by a reported tornado in Manawatū, with one injured and three others assessed for injury.

According to MetService, an active low-pressure system was expected to move onto central and northern New Zealand tomorrow before moving east on Thursday.
