A homicide investigation has been launched after the death of a woman in the Otago settlement of Crichton last night.
Police were called to Adams Flat Rd at around 6.10pm on Friday.
Detective Sergeant Hayden Smale a man remained in a critical condition in hospital following the incident.
He said a scene guard remained in place at the address while a scene examination was carried out.
St John said it responded to the incident with a first response vehicle, a helicopter and an operations manager, but referred all further inquiries to police.
"One patient was airlifted to Dunedin hospital in a critical condition," a St John spokesperson said.
Smale said there was not believed to be any risk to public safety following this incident.
"The Crichton community can expect to see an increased police presence in the area while these enquiries are carried out."
