Three dead in separate crashes across New Zealand

Crashes have been reported up and down the country.

Three people have died in separate crashes across the country today, prompting road closures and serious crash investigations.

Police were first called to a single-vehicle crash on Waimarama Rd in Hastings at around 6.45am. One person was found dead at the scene. The road was closed for several hours while police carried out a scene examination.

Just before 11am, emergency services were alerted to a crash between a motorcycle and a car on State Highway 1 in Mangaweka near Taihape. The motorcyclist died at the scene.

A section of SH1 was closed while police examined the crash site.

A third fatal crash occurred on Lindis Pass–Tarras Rd in central Otago this afternoon.

Police were notified of a two-vehicle crash near Omarama–Lindis Pass Road just after 12.20pm.

"Sadly, despite best efforts of emergency services, one person died at the scene," a police spokesperson said.

The road remains closed while a scene examination is completed.

St John responded with one rural response vehicle, one rapid response unit, one manager, one ambulance, and one helicopter.

"Our crews have assessed and treated three patients; one patient in a moderate condition who was airlifted to Lakes District Hospital, one patient in a minor condition who was transported via road to Oamaru Hospital, and one patient in a minor condition who was assessed and treated at the scene," a St John spokesperson said.
