New test for people applying for New Zealand citizenship by grant

The Government is set to introduce a new citizenship test for people applying for New Zealand citizenship by grant.

From late 2027, those applying for citizenship by grant will undergo the test, which will include questions on the Bill of Rights Act, certain criminal offences, voting rights, democratic principles, the structure of government, and travel to and from New Zealand.

A widow has spoken to Thames District Court about the death of her truck driver husband – whose May 2023 death in an accident highlighted a number of health and safety failures.

Greg Stevens, 59, died after his logging truck rolled as he tried to negotiate a tight bend on a road that was part of a wood lot harvest operation run by Forest 360.

Broadcasting Standards Authority to be axed, self-regulation signaled

The Government will disestablish the Broadcasting Standards Authority with the "expectation" that journalism will become self-regulated through the Media Council, says minister Paul Goldsmith.

Media Minister Goldsmith confirmed today the Government had agreed to progress with scrapping the BSA, adding "self-regulation options" would be investigated, but he expected the Media Council to "become the primary regulator for journalism".
