The owner of an Ashburton Four Square is thrilled for the community after a winning $28.2 million Lotto ticket was sold at her store.

The owner-operator told 1News that she and her staff were "pretty excited" that the winner was a local.

Thunderstorms possible as 'active front' moves over North Island

Heavy rain and squally thunderstorms are expected to move over the North Island from late this evening, according to MetService.

The forecaster said an active front moving in eastwards from the Tasman Sea from late Thursday to early Saturday would bring periods of heavy rain and possible squally thunderstorms.

Four Kiwi MPs banned from China for a year after visiting Taiwan

A group of four MPs who visited Taiwan last month have been banned from entering China, Hong Kong, and Macau for a year.

The Chinese Embassy said if any of the MPs involved apologised, the sanctions may be suspended or cancelled.
