An inmate has died at Rimutaka Prison after being found collapsed in his unit on Wednesday morning.

Rimutaka Prison general manager Dennis Goodin said staff responded "quickly and professionally", providing first AID, performing CPR and calling an ambulance.

"Ambulance staff attended and continued to provide CPR, but were unfortunately unable to revive him," Goodin said.

"Our thoughts are with the prisoner’s family and those close to him during this difficult time."

Other prisoners in the unit would be provided with support, Goodin said, including access to Chaplains and cultural support where requested.

The independent Corrections Inspectorate would carry out an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death.

Police had also been informed of the incident and the man's next of kin had been notified.

The death would be referred to the coroner.
