A state of emergency has been declared in the Kaikōura district after the Kōwhai River burst its banks this morning, causing significant flooding.
Residents in parts of Kaikōura were urged to evacuate immediately and move to higher ground, according to Civil Defence.
The North Canterbury town has been cut off by road, with several sections of state highway affected by weather across the South Island.

Red Fox Tavern killing convictions quashed by Supreme Court
The two men convicted in the Red Fox Tavern cold case murder have had their convictions quashed.
Chris Bush was gunned down at the Maramarua pub on the Saturday of Labour Weekend in 1987, and two balaclava-clad offenders fled with more than $30,000.
