A magnitude 5.7 earthquake has struck near Te Araroa on the East Coast of the North Island this evening.
GeoNet said the quake struck 10km south-west of Te Araroa at around 8.35pm at a depth of about 39km.
It described the shaking as "strong" and received over 5000 reports.
New Zealand Civil Defence said online it had been "a shaky few days across the motu with another earthquake near Te Araroa tonight".
"It’s a reminder that our beautiful landscapes were formed by massive forces at work below the surface, and living alongside them means staying prepared.
"Remember, DROP, COVER and HOLD is the right action to take during an earthquake. If you’re near the coast and the shaking is LONG or STRONG, then GET GONE," it said.
"Emergencies can happen anytime, anywhere."
Some social media user reporting feeling the quake, with one describing it as a "nice wobble in Wellington".
Another said: "Long and strong In Waihi beach."
It followed other decent jolts over the weekend, including a 4.6-magnitude quake 30 kilometres north-west of Porirua and on Saturday afternoon, a 5.2 quake near Te Anau.
