Coldest morning of winter ahead as snow to fall to sea level in south
Thursday morning is likely to be the coldest of winter for much of the country but, before that, snow is set to fall to sea level in the south and disrupt travel on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Frigid air directly off the Antarctic ice sheet is driving the drop in temperatures, dragging snow down to low levels in the east early in the week before clearing skies and lighter winds let overnight temperatures fall away.

An inquest into the death of Pauline Hanna has begun in Auckland – with a reminder that her husband is not on trial.
Hanna was found dead at her Remuera home in 2021. Her husband, retired eye surgeon Philip Polkinghorne, was found not guilty of her murder at a trial in 2024.
Deaf man dies after being spear tackled by police officer during fracas
A trip to the pub took a deadly turn, when a police arrest resulted in the death of a 65-year-old deaf man.
Peter Tuhi went for a drink at Tony's Place in Levin, later becoming aggressive during a fracas in a nearby carpark.
