MetService is warning people to "wrap up warm" and watch out for icy patches after a very chilly start to the morning.
The forecaster said clear skies overnight had allowed heat to "escape into the atmosphere".
"Many places recorded their coldest temperatures of the year so far this morning, particularly across the North Island," it said.

Lowest temperatures recorded across the North Island at 7am included Hamilton (-2.8C), Rotorua: (-3.9C), Taupō (5.1C), Taumarunui (-3.1C), Masterton (-4.4C), Levin (-2.6C).
Wellington recorded a positive digit of 1.7C, while in the South Island Christchurch recorded lows of -4.6C.
MetService said with clear skies set to continue tonight, another frosty start was forecast for tomorrow morning.
"Wrap up warm, watch out for icy patches early on, and make the most of the winter sunshine while it's out," it said.
MetService meteorologist Heather Keats said it's "going to be another cold one".
"Fortunately, there's not a lot going on today. A ridge of high pressure is spreading across most of us, just a few showers down in the far south, and that'll mainly affect Stewart Island maybe Invercargill too," she said.
She said it was "freezing in Christchurch this morning, likely to be severe frost around the region".
